A meta tag is short for metadata tag. It is a piece of code, described in HyperText Markup Language (HTML). Meta tags help describe a website content.

Why Are Meta Tags Important?
The two most important meta tags are meta title and description. People searching Google and other search engines will see your meta title and description first. They kind of work as the window to your site.
People browse Google and other search engines to look for information. Based on a user’s query, they queue up results in a list of titles and descriptions. A user determines which website to click through based on the meta titles and descriptions.
The two important meta tags are your first bet to stand out in a competition. They help you tell the people what your website stands for. Moreover, it’s a sales opportunity for businesses. Businesses can tell potential buyers though those tags what they should expect.
Another important thing about Meta Tag is; it tells the summery to Google and other search engines. The search engine robots take the Meta tags importantly and they look it carefully before visiting the full content on the body.
The Most Important Meta Tags for SEO
As I said above, there are meta tags that can be measured by their importance. As search engines evolved, the focus on meta tags also changed over the years. Looking at how Google changed and how things developed over the years, the most important meta tags are numbered. There are probably only 3-4 most important meta tags for SEO.
Below is a list of meta tags you will hear about the most:
- Title Tag
- Description Tag
- H1 Tag
- Keywords Tag
- Meta Robots Tag
- Canonical Tag
- Social Media Meta Tags
- Open Graph Meta Tags (og data)
Now, let’s explore the most important meta tags you will work with for SEO:
Title Tag is one of the most important tags for SEO. The Title Tag appears in the top of the browser. To identify your page from others, you have to use the Title Tag. The Title Tag tells people shortly what your page deals with.
There are some important factors to consider when writing a Title Tag:
- Length: limit your Title Tag within 70 characters.
- Keywords: choose the keywords you will use in the Title Tag wisely. They should describe the content on the webpage concisely.
Description Tag provides a brief description of the web page. It doesn’t have a direct impact on SEO, but it is still important.
Important things to consider:
- Length: limit the description within 150 to 160 characters.
- Duplicate: do not have duplicate description when writhing a description tag.

Heading Tags (H1-H6)
Search engines prioritize the text inserted in this tag. If you want to extend your title tag, then use the H1 or H2 Tag. You can strengthen your brand name with this tag.
Syntax: <h1>Text to Emphasize</h1>
The tag is used to insert relevant keywords for your page. This tag will help describe your page better. However, today, this tag is useless on Google. But Bing and other search engines like Altavista still counts this.
Meta Robots Tag
This tag tells the search engines how they should deal with your pages. This tag is important to determine whether your page should be indexed or not.
Syntax: <meta name”=robots”content=”value”>

Open Graph Meta Tags
Open Graph or OG Tags are specially for Social Media indexation and sharing purposes. If you can’t apply OG meta; your content will not look good while it will be shared on Social Media websites. Besides, using the open graph meta tags; your social media content will be indexable and the visibility will be much improved.
